Reparations for Black Americans in the United States aim to rectify historical injustices and address the racial wealth gap. Here are key points on how reparations could address ongoing institutional racism:
- Wealth Disparity: The racial wealth gap is stark. Black Americans possess only 2.6% of the nation’s wealth while constituting 13% of the population. The average Black household’s net worth is $800,000 lower than that of the average white household. This disparity stems from historical injustices, including unmet promises of land grants to formerly enslaved individuals and racist policies1.
- Origins of Wealth Gap:
- After slavery, the promise of 40 acres in land grants to the formerly enslaved went unfulfilled, while many White Americans received substantial land grants.
- Black communities faced destruction by White massacres when they achieved prosperity.
- Racist policies related to home ownership reduced Black homeownership rates and appreciation for purchased homes.
- The GI Bill disproportionately benefited White veterans, further exacerbating the wealth gap1.
- Core Objective of Reparations:
- Erasing the racial wealth disparity must be a core objective of reparations for Black American descendants of U.S. slavery.
- Public policy created this wealth gap, and it will require public policy to eliminate it.
- Estimates suggest that achieving this goal would require $10 to $12 trillion in federal expenditures1.
- Elimination of Wealth Gap:
- Well-executed reparations, directly targeting the wealth gap, can lead to its elimination.
- Other social policies may also play a role in addressing institutional racism, but reparations are a critical step2.
Pay what you owe. “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8).
There should be prayer vigils for reparations. The people of God cried out to the Lord over their circumstances and He came mightily to help.
If the church does not specifically pray for reparations without a double mind, they will not receive anything from the Lord.
It is time to pray.

People war and fight and have lack because they do not ask God for what they need. When they ask, they are not doing His will or considering His way. For my believers in Christ, you know God has made a way in the midst of being targeted for being black. I have seen many of my black colleagues taken out of the way and falsely accused. It’s super common for black men. Since we know we have a target, it makes no sense for us to wrestle in the natural alone, we must wrestle in the spirit and in prayer. Amen.
