In the past, I wanted to write a book called “Dispositional Sins” and the thesis is based on the fact that everyone has a dispositional sin battle. For my dispositional sin its lust, another may have greed, another may have pride, another may have stealing, etc. You did not ask for the disposition, it comes with being born into sin. No one can answer, why the devil is able to tempt one person to steal and another does not struggle with stealing. Another may struggle with drugs or alcohol. One person takes one drink and cannot stop. Another can have one and there is no struggle to be done. We may not have the same struggle, but we all have one and unfortunately some have more then one. “Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin” (1 Peter 4:1). You cannot have salvation without the suffering and this is why so many will enter hell. Going along with the flesh is easy. Anyone on a diet? You already know your flesh will fight you.
What makes suffering in the flesh acutely difficult for me and maybe for you is the fact that God controls everything, but refuses to allow you to skip the suffering part. So much is written on living holy and being free and delivered, but you cannot be saved and free from the suffering. God has ordained the suffering. He told us through his Son using a military term. Arm yourself. Get ready for suffering, if you want to walk with Jesus. No easy out. No simple deliverance. Just plain old suffering. The way is narrow because of the ordained suffering. You cannot fast your way out of temptation. I tried that. Fasted five days without food and water. I added suffering to the suffering in hopes to end the suffering and found after the fast more suffering. I should have known better because God already said, arm yourself. Basically, set yourself up with the notion, the wisdom and idea that if you are going to be saved, you will suffer. You may think you are alone in your suffering and I assure you, you are not. You may be suffering right now in secret, I am suffering right now. You are not alone in your suffering. I must fight my flesh the same as I did when I was twenty, my Dad, tells me that he has to fight his flesh. So what do I expect if I live as long as him? Suffering.
Some of us are confused by Jesus burden being light and his yoke being easy. If you look at this verse in terms of the present, you’ve missed it. There is nothing easy about being saved and fighting sin in your life. It is nothing light about the burden of working out your salvation with fear and trembling. The way is narrow for a reason. It is the most difficult to stay on. If you look at this verse in terms of prophecy, you’ve got it. In light of hell, the work in Jesus is easy and light. The suffering on earth does not compare to the suffering that will be done in hell. Suffering is ordained by God. You will either suffering willfully by rejecting sin in your flesh or without your will in hell. Hell is far worse.
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory (1 Peter 4:12-13). In the suffering it becomes easy to blame God. In fact, demons are behind your ear whispering isn’t God messed up to cause all this suffering? Never forget Christ suffered upon the cross. An innocent man was beaten and killed. Remind yourself of his suffering, when the devil whispers isn’t God messed up to cause all this suffering.
